Middle School: Celebrate Your Freedom to Read

Love of Reading
Read for a variety of purposes and across content areas.

  • Evaluate grade appropriate quality literature and understand censorship

What is banned books week?

The freedom to choose the books you want to read.

Intellectual Freedom is the right of every individual to both seek and receive information from all points of view without restriction (ala.org)

When a book is banned, it is taken off the shelf for EVERYONE to read which doesn't allow YOU to make your own choices.

You know what content you aren't ready for.  If you aren't ready for an intense book or you feel it's inappropriate, then YOU make that decision instead of someone else making it for you.
Banned books week is about YOU'RE right to decide if a book is right for you.
Why are books challenged?

Who challenges books?

Where are books challenged?
